President Prabowo Subianto’s key programs, Free Nutritious Meals (Makan Bergizi Gratis / MBG), People’s School (Sekolah Rakyat), and Merah Putih Village/Urban Cooperatives (Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih / Kopdes), are being hailed as pathways to expedite poverty elimination. These initiatives are not only aimed at reducing poverty but also at empowering individuals for economic self-sufficiency, as stated by Budiman Sudjatmiko, Head of the Poverty Eradication Acceleration Agency (BP Taskin). The government’s strategy, likened to a soccer game, focuses on equipping individuals with necessary skills, knowledge, nutrition, and economic opportunities to score the ultimate goal of eradicating poverty.
Sekolah Rakyat, a boarding-based education program, intends to break the poverty cycle, while MBG and Kopdes Merah Putih aim to provide economic advantages to entire communities. The establishment of MBG kitchens and Kopdes retail outlets is expected to create millions of employment opportunities, benefitting various sectors like farmers, SMEs, and village-owned enterprises. Nanik S. Deyang, Deputy Head of BP Taskin, emphasized that these initiatives offer tangible hope to disadvantaged households, with boarding schools fostering aspirations and MBG boosting local producers’ revenues.
Kopdes Merah Putih plays a significant role in streamlining supply chains by eliminating costly intermediaries. Through Kopdes, the prices of essential goods like 3-kilogram LPG cylinders can align with government rates, and farmers can access fertilizers at reduced prices without navigating through multiple distributors. Nanik also highlighted Kopdes’ provision of affordable credit, liberating individuals from exploitative lenders and offering more favorable lending terms than traditional financial institutions.
